[ale] Video Cards

I don't think even in framebuffer mode on any card you should be experiencing 
that kind of slow-down.  There might be something else wrong.  What 
kind/speed processor do you have, how much memory?  I have and old pci card 
an S3 I think with 2 megs that seems to run X better than you can.  The 
processor is only a 200MMX with 128 Megs.  I am able to run 1024x768 at 16 
bit color with no problem.  This computer runs redhat 7.1 stock everything.
I also have another machine with a k6-2 333 running mandrake 8.1 with a 4meg 
ATI pci video that runs fine even at 1024x768 16bit.  Just trying to provide 
some reference for performance.
