I am not a programmer, but I got the bulk of my begginer experience at
temporary services.  Didn't pay particularly well, but it kept me employed.
In your situation, it would also keep some time free to keep learning and
search for a "real" job.  After aquiring some experience the fact that I
only had an AS degree didn't mean as much.  This was quite a few years ago
so I don't know if that would work today.  ...pj

A few things that helped me get my first job (in no order).

1) The words Intern before the job I was looking for.
2) I had worked as a technician in a retail computer store.
3) Brainbench.com helped me alot, for example on the Linux Administrator I
scored in the 93 percentile.
    Go on their site and take a few test. You can use this to show at least
knowledge in the field if you don't have experience.
4) But the real truth is that if you can get an interview and know your
stuff you shouldn't have a problem finding a job.
    I remember one of the first question my boss asked me in the interview
was "what are the fields in the correct order and their purpose in
/etc/passwd."
5) Build a portfolio of programming examples. If you know PHP, show them
some proof. I know PHP works well with a SQL database. Why not build a
database of your mp3s, and create a searchable web based frontend. (Check
out perl MP3::Info for ID3 info.) or if your not into mp3s... maybe a
database of your porn (maybe your could have users rate the pictures from
1-10)?
6) O'Rielly books! read them all.

I've been looking for a new job in the *nix field for about a month and a
half now...unfortunately, I have no college degree whatsoever nor previous
job experience in a related field, so literally *none* of my emails have
ever been even so much as answered.

I wondered if anybody else has been in this situation, and if so, how you
got started?  Any good places to look for entry level positions in, say, a
PHP programming field?
