[ale] sendmail puzzle

Hi all,

I was looking in my /var/spool/mqueue and saw a pile of mail that my
server had received for local delivery to myself and my wife. Some of it
was dated from 8 days ago!? mailq showed it as being mail waiting to be
delivered.

I was tinkering with a kernel and had to reboot. After the reboot (and
dinner) the mqueue was empty and the mail was delivered locally.

I have sendmail set to deliver on a 5 minute interval and I watched this
stuff in the queue for over 2 hours.

What flushes the queue and why did this stuff sit? Other mail was comming
in during this time. The O'Reilly sendmail book is great, but sendmail is
HUGE!
