[ale] maps?

That would be my old thread... I just use a shell script in a cron job to
pull down the weather image. I use imagemagick to make it fit into a size I
like and I display on my background using Xwin32 (my office desktop PC is a
winbox).

I also pull down the latest CNN headline and image and put them on the
desktop too. If you use X it'll be quite straightforward to use.

If you use windows, you've got a few options, but they're not as cut-n-dry.
You could a) set your background to a webpage and then make the webpage
refresh every few minutes --or-- b) use Xwin32 or eXceed and I guess
theoretically you could c) use imagemagick to compile the images into a
background image and ftp/smbclient the image over to your win box. I'm not
sure how often it would refresh though. Probably only whenever IE or
explorer crashes/resets (try moving your start bar to see what I mean).

You can see if you've have imagemagick installed by trying to run mogrify or
convert or display; they're part of the package.

I'll post the script tomorrow AM when I get to the office, and walk you thru
using it.

HTH,
CB

there was a string posted a while back about weather
maps... running black box wm im not sure if some of
the scripts mentioned would work or not (im not a
linux guru) was there a conclusion of a way to make
the back ground to window managers post maps of the
local weather?
sorry to drudge up the dead but it was a nice idea and
id like to implement it :)
