Try debian.
make boot floppies and if you can get your pcmcia network card up
you can install the rest over the net. Install base and do not go 
further with the install. add packages as needed using apt-get.

	Oh!  Did I miss that detail in the original message as well
(the fact that it's a laptop)?  Is the network card built in or a
PCMCIA card?  This is sounding more and more like what I was trying
to do and your network problems with Slackware sound very familiar.
