Joe,

Are you using a correct null-modem cable?  Try a speed greater than 9600.  Maybe 115200.  That will work much better.

Subject: [ale] PPP via serial null-modem cable

Hi everyone,

Has anyone here run PPP to connect two machines via a serial
line? I'm following the instructions in the PPP-HOWTO
about this, but it's not working. Specifically, I (seem to)
get a connection, but both pppd's exit after a few seconds
with "LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests".

On machine A, I do:

pppd -detach crtscts local 10.0.0.1:10.0.0.2 /dev/ttyS0 9600

and on machine B:

pppd -detach crtscts local 10.0.0.2:10.0.0.1 /dev/ttyS0 9600

After doing the second command, I get "Connect ppp0<-->/dev/ttyS0"
on each machine, but they can't ping one another, and after
twenty seconds or so the LCP timeout message appears.

Thanks in advance,
