Sure, knock yourself out!  You may find that if the linked-in space in
question is used for Samba, FTP, or Apache that you may need to change those
apps' configs to allow the following of links, and if you do that, make sure
that no one can create a link in that space to wherever they want.   

One thing this is good for is if you have different filesystems (especially
RAID volumes) that are optimized for different things.  For example, if your
system streams video among other things, you might put a link somewhere
under /home that points to a directory on a stripe set that contains the
video.
