[ale] CD ROM peculiarites

I can't provide a definitive solution but I bet I know what it's related to:
automounting.   On my new machine, which has a SCSI CD-RW drive, the default
installation of Gnome caused the CD-RW to read really slowly.  KDE or running
X-less did not have the problem.
