U dont need a kernel patch to get it to work.
Boot off the cd and before partitioning cat /proc/pci in one of the many
virtual screens.
Get the irq and address information of your promise card.

at boot prompt of redhat cd

boot:linux ide2=0xaddress1,0xaddress2+2,irq

Sometimes you might have more than one ide controller on the ata66 card.
If thats the case you can have an ide3 there too.

Look at the below doc for detailed explanation( its under ultra33, but
it also works for ata66 :)
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Ultra-DMA-5.html

bewarned that the ata66 now operates in the backward compatibility mode,
and hence is slower. You should really apply the kernel patch and tweak
it with hdparm to obtain the ata66 performance. Also adding any other
ethernet card might cause a change in the irq( dynamic ).

during lilo install, append the ide... string.

The patch can be found here.

http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/hedrick/

BTW Suse6.3 has that patch as a part of the reqular distro.

Good Luck!
