Sounds like my setup. I have two desktop machines, a laptop that is
seldom on, and an internet appliance in my home entertainment system.
I use a 486DX4-100 as my masquerading router running linux. I have a
MediaOne cable modem.

When the installation got to the point where the install guy would
expect to boot up my Windows machine I said "What I would like is to
just give you my MAC address and let me do it myself."

"What operating system are you using?" he asked.

"Linux" I replied at which he threw up his hands.

"Whoa. Not supported! Not Supported!" he half jokingly said, but he
had no problem with me doing as I had said.

He phoned in the MAC address and a half hour later we were able to use
dhcp on my 486.

I did have a windows installation on my desktop, just in case, but if
he had used it I was going to have to call in to change my MAC to the
one in the 486 anyway.

A lot may depend on who does your installation. I could imagine
someone refusing to install it for you. Of course, I didn't mention
Linux until all the wiring was done.
