[ale] List of "Popular" Linux Apps. Soughr

H'Lo -

A few [?] years ago, I recall a list of Linux applications which were 'work-alikes' or served
the same purpose as familiar main-stream commercial apps: word processing,
spreadsheets, drawing, etc., to suggest when comments came up like, "Yeah, but
my cousin can't index his/her recipes in Linux, so I can't use it at home." If anyone knows
such a list in reasonably current form, I would appreciate a pointer to it.

I am preparing a presentation to the local Mechanical Engineering society to introduce
some offerings of Free Software and Open Source Software, tentatively titled:
"Free Speech, Free Lunch, and Free Software." I plan to mention useful and popular apps,
give some user's perspective, and try to dispel some of the FUD which can arise around
commercial use of GPL and LGPL materials.

Reminders of Win-hosted, publically distributed apps (a`la: Pine, GIMP, Cygwin,
Source Navigator) would be great, too.

I would be happy to have topical input, too, on the understanding that I may gratefully
receive comments, then elect [&;^)-] to ignore them.

Thanks very much for any input and/or comments.

Regards
 - John Mills
