Thanks for suggestions on tracking my lost e-mail
problem. Recap: I had 'fetchmail' and 'sendmail' working
with one pop server, one user-name alias, and one
host-name.domain combination, but failed to move it to
my new domain setup when I went to a new interface,
domain name, and an additional pop server. Now
'fetchmail' seems to capture the traffic properly, but
'sendmail' doesn't deliver it to my spool. I set a
logfile for 'fetchmail' and ran a short set of messages
through the works, but don't understand what 'maillog'
is telling me -- presumably enough to solve my problem.
This seems to have died on me when I tried to change my
local hostname, FWIW. I did manage to spool mail from
the old server before I tried moving from 'ppp0' to
'eth0', adding the new server, and changing my HOSTNAME.
The new setup now blows away mail from both the old and
the new pop servers.
I did the following test:
1) I sent mail from an outside host to my new account at
the ISP (<john at mills-atl.com>). I then popped the 3
waiting messages with 'fetchmail'. Two of those I had
sent generated delivery error messages to my sending
account.
2) I sent mail from my host (otter.mills-atl.com) to my
ISP mail account, and to a forwarding pointer which
points back to the same account. I then popped these 2
messages with 'fetchmail'.
I attach three fragments:
1) 'fetchmail' log showing that it popped the two sets
of messages and flushed them at the server.
2) 'sendmail' log showing some name resolution
problems, receipt of the first set of messages, sending
the test notes, and receipt of the second set.
3) one of the delivery-error messages received by my
outside sending host.
I also tried sending to myself:
<jmills at otter.mills-atl.com> and <jmills at localhost>.
These were not delivered, nor they get routed through my
ISP's pop server (naturally). I don't think that
outbound traffic is on the logs.
If anyone has patience to look at these and help me sort
them out, I would greatly appreciate it.
