[ale] Caldera startup screen

How do I get rid of this stupid startup screen? I installed 2.2 just fine.
Then I upgraded the kernel to 2.2.12 and rebooted. Everything is just fine
except that I can not use the main console. I can telnet in and work OK. I can
ca-f7 and get the kde login and then go to an xterm, but no matter what I do,
I can not get a clean screen in text mode. (I did change the inittab to 3
instead of 5, so it would boot text). It still starts up with the Caldera init
screen, shows boot:, then loading kernel and displays about a dozen dots, then
nothing. I now it completes booting because I can log in as root (using the
hard drive chatter to let me know where I am), I just can't see what I'm
typing.
