Have you tried booting Linux from floppy to find out what type and
configuration drive Linux finds?

I've got an old 386 with a conner cp3044; according to the conner/seagate
site, it's got 980 cyl, 5 heads, 17 sectors per track, and NONE precomp.

My vintage 1989 AST BIOS offers 989 cyl (rest is correct) but not 980. The
drive worked before on this machine. The bios doesn't offer an auto-detect
or custom config that I can see. Any idea about how I can get it to be
detected by the bios? When I set it to 989cyl the drive doesn't get
detected.
