Several months ago I got an eval copy of something called Xni that runs under
Linux and others.  It does exactly what you're describing.  Have a look at
http://www.inetd.com.

I had it running under Linux on my laptop when I took a trip up to my company's
home office in Buffalo and took the opportunity to record a 15-minute session,
with most interesting results - like significant amounts of IPX/SPX traffic in a
place that had no NetWare servers.

Firstly, my thanks to all for the Perl tip.  The script is working like a
champ here.

There is some debate going on here at work as to our network flow and how
much of what type of packet(s) accounts for out traffic.  Rather than
continue to listen to the debate, I would like to do an analysis of our
network traffic.

I would like to know if anyone has successfully used Linux and an analysis
program to do this kind of work.  If they have, I would greatly appreciate
the program name and any setup tips.
