I have a problem with my modem locking up and not responding to any
commands. The phone out is even dead when it locks up. I don't know what
the modem is doing but it freaks out(not that i'm picking up the phone or
any aol.com crap like that. It just dies.). One time I started looking
into it. I disable the computer from the wal and placed the phone into
the line into the modem. It sounded like it was requesting log on. Then
I tried all the modem commands to make it stop and nothing works. Like
it's in the freaked out state of mind. I'm used minicom and echos to the
/dev. Since it's a internal (dang i wish i spent the extra 50 bucks now) i
have to reboot to get out out of this state. Which really sucks becuase
it's also my NFS & app server.

What might be cuasing it to do this?

I have had the problem for a while. I have done everything i can think of
doing. I took out the other modem, disable the onboard serial ports,
disabled power management, rewrite and reviewed all connection scripts.
Now i'm completely lost. Everything seams to be setup right but i think
it might be something in the kernal (i'm using 2.2.5 and pppd 2.3.9). I
mean it can be a pain to logon but once logged on it's fine fir a few
hours. It sounds funny when it the login attepts fails. It's not the
normale sound you hear sorta like a dieing sound. Also i can hear "clicks
and pops" coming from it at odd hours. Maybe the modem is dieing. It has
been working non stop for 18 months. But surely, it's can't be that!!!
Also one night i found the modem smoking crack and another night it
popped some pills. So that might had a lasting effect. Hehe.

One last thing, It is used as the uplink for my one way Cable Modem and
my isp is linux unfriendly. The last time it died the news user was open
three times at the same time. Bug/cracker prehaps??
