I just starting subscribing to this list, so forgive me if this has
already been suggested, but for a very thorough Unix reference book, I
highly recommend "Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment" by W.
Richard Stevens. I was just fairly recently turned onto this book by a
friend of mine -- I wish I had found it YEARS ago.

I've also got Unix Network Programming Vol I and II by the same author,
and they are also very good, particularly if you are doing a lot of
sockets and/or IPC programming.
