[ale] Laptop setup

I have acquired a Dell Latitude CPt Celeron 333MHz. Last night I tried installing Suse 6.1 on it with some success.
After specifying hdc=cdrom for the install kernel parameter bootup, I was able to get thru the install. I can boot into
Linux and get to the console login!:-)

The Linux Laptop page had a link to a page where the guy talked about compiling the 2.2.10 kernel with framebuffer
support to get the Neomagic 256ZX video chip support working. My skill level isn't quite at that point. I have yet to
compile a kernel myself. What I have to do at this point is:

1. Disable gpm and figure out the Synaptics Touchpad driver package. (Link from Linux Laptop page)
2. Get 2.2.10 kernel source and XFree 3.3.3.1 w/framebuffer support compiled. (Laptop page supplies working config
files, so that is a big help)
3. Use Fips to reduce Win98 space to minimum
4. Work on getting Yamaha sound working. No idea there except for OSS drivers.

I can probably figure out #1 and #3 by myself but I am unfamiliar with kernel source compilation. Has anyone been in a
similar situation and successfully used the Kernel-HOWTO by themselves? Is there anyone, maybe Linuxgeneralstore guys,
that will help out newbies with getting a new machine squared away? Thanks for the help,
Dow
