[ale] Where is X lock files?

I've fixed this once before. Can't recall how. 

2 machines. One with UPS, one without. SSH connection from Ups to bare.
running an X app from bare to display on UPS. %$#&^ power goes out! UPS
still up. Bare reboots, fsck's for a while. Declares all OK. Restart ssh
connection. try to restart xapp. get error:

_X11TransSocketINETConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111

It seems to me that there is a lock somewhere that is blocking this. But I
can't find it. Suggestions are _welcome_ :)
