the /etc/passwd file's entries should look like this:

chiang:x:500:500:Lisa Chiang,,,,:/home/chiang:/bin/bash
oberer:x:501:501:Rick Oberer,,,,:/home/oberer:/bin/bash

and the /etc/shadow file's entries should look like this:

chiang:./fuKL7jlOSwA:10480:0:99999:7:::
oberer:uBtyc8w6MeW7E:10480:0:99999:7:::
