amd is a very nice tool.  I personaly like to "cd /net/ftp.kernel.org/pub...."
and go from there.  Check your host info.  It's possible  it's trying to look
up info in yp when you're not running it.  Look into /etc/nsswitch.conf
and verify your settings.
