I would recommend going to the site:

http://www.btc.gatech.edu/net/management/linux/

It has snmp as part of its components.

Some of it is out of date, but a majority of the
links are good.  You will probably end up using
cmu-snmp or ucd-snmp (perl module to go with it).
The cmu-snmp has userland utilities too.
