[ale] Problem With Compile

While trying to compile the kernel I get:

gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/old/temp/linux-1.2.13/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2
-fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -m486 -c -o init/main.o init/main.c
/old/temp/linux-1.2.13/include/asm/io.h: In function `copro_timeout':
/old/temp/linux-1.2.13/include/asm/io.h:82: inconsistent operand constraints in
an `asm'
/old/temp/linux-1.2.13/include/asm/io.h:82: inconsistent operand constraints in
an `asm'
/old/temp/linux-1.2.13/include/asm/io.h:82: inconsistent operand constraints in
an `asm'
/old/temp/linux-1.2.13/include/asm/io.h:82: inconsistent operand constraints in
an `asm'
/old/temp/linux-1.2.13/include/asm/io.h: In function `check_fpu':
/old/temp/linux-1.2.13/include/asm/io.h:78: inconsistent operand constraints in
an `asm'

an `asm'
/old/temp/linux-1.2.13/include/asm/io.h:82: inconsistent operand constraints in
an `asm'
make: *** [init/main.o] Error 1

The code means little to me:
__IN(b,"b","0" (0))
__IN(w,"w","0" (0))
__IN(l,"")

__OUT(b,"b",char)
__OUT(w,"w",short)
__OUT(l,,int)

My system is red 2.1 accidently pounced upon a Slackware 2.2 system. I
am running ELF, but have not been able to compile a.out yet. I assume I have a
setup problem.

The asm inlcude files are there, make depend works, and I *thought* I compilied
a kernel before...
