[ale] X windows colour depth

I dont want to sound like a newbie, but I have to ask this 
question. I have X11R6 like most, but i can only get it
to display in 8 bit (256) colour depth. I'd like to adjust
this to something like 24 bit. I can't seem to do it in
/etc/XF86config without X dying on me, and I cna't find 
anything in the man pages about an option to pass to
xinit. 

Anyone help?
