[ale] configuring getty for dialin logins

I'm trying to configure a modem to allow dialin logins on a RedHat 3.0.3
box. I've added the following entry to the /etc/inittab file:

# Added to allow logins on the modem on Serial 1
S0:3:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyS0 B38400 vt100

When I tell init to re-read the inittab file with "init q", I get the
following errors in /var/log/messages:

Jul 31 15:26:28 aleach-pc init: Re-reading inittab
Jul 31 15:26:30 aleach-pc getty[731]: Segmentation fault
Jul 31 15:26:32 aleach-pc getty[732]: Segmentation fault
Jul 31 15:26:35 aleach-pc getty[733]: Segmentation fault
Jul 31 15:26:37 aleach-pc getty[734]: Segmentation fault
Jul 31 15:26:39 aleach-pc getty[736]: Segmentation fault
Jul 31 15:26:41 aleach-pc getty[737]: Segmentation fault
Jul 31 15:26:43 aleach-pc getty[738]: Segmentation fault
Jul 31 15:26:45 aleach-pc getty[739]: Segmentation fault
Jul 31 15:26:47 aleach-pc getty[740]: Segmentation fault
Jul 31 15:26:49 aleach-pc getty[741]: Segmentation fault
Jul 31 15:26:49 aleach-pc init: Id "S0" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

Additionally, the permisions on /dev/ttyS0 go from crw-r--r-- crw-------
each time "init q" is executed. What's wrong?!?! I've tried to
understand from the Serial-HOWTO, the RedHat Unleashed book, the relevant
man pages (getty, inittab, init), and various web sites I found from a
search, but to no avail...

Thanks for any suggestions...
