cron shutdown corupted disk

I added a call to shutdown into my root crontab. Although it shutdown
the machine, when it came back up, it ran fsck. Question is, why would
a call to shutdown from cron corrupt the disk? Has anyone else experienced
this. Has anyone else run shutdown from cron? I may add a few syncs, prior
to the call, but certainly shutdown is doing that for me. Any clues will
be greatly appreciated.
