background color of shell in X-Windows

Using the Linux 1.1.59 kernel, when I am typing into any shell that is opened under
X or Openwin it eventually gets the background changed to some color such that
you can't eaisly read the text.  Anyone know what the problem is?  What can I
do to stop this?  I am using the SVGA X windows server but I also use the S3
server at work and it has the same problem.  I would appreciate any help.
