Trashing everything might be the best bet... I just attempted to update part
of my system from slackware 1.2.0 to 2.0 and got what I'd always asked for...
an education. I finally got things back to normal but was offline for three
days deciding how to get back to normal. I finally reinstalled the 1.2.0
base system and then restored my old /etc from tape. With the hybrid my
network initialization failed, syslogd wrote to stdout, hostname came up
blank even when I hardwired it in rc.M and rc.inet1, and of course with no
hostname sendmail and inn were totally hosed.

Moral: never tinker with the machine you live on....

I'm still at a loss as to why I had the trouble but even the gurus at the
office were stumped, so I don't feel too stupid.

Regards,
Chuck
